Back and neck pain are common.

Back and neck pain are very common. It is the second most common reason someone would go to the doctor. 80% of the entire population will have a serious episode of back pain in their lifetime. 50% of the population will have significant back or neck pain in any given year. 20% of the work force will take time off from work due to back pain in any given year.

Where does back and neck pain come from?

The spine is a complicated structure of 34 vertebrae, 100 joints, 23 discs, 64 nerves, 220 ligaments and 120 muscles. Any and all of these structures can be involved in generating pain. A careful, thorough examination is critical to finding the source of your problem. Sometimes people have an obvious injury to their back or neck, but sometimes the simplest of movements—for example, picking up a pencil from the floor— can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back and neck pain. It’s reported that up to 80% of persons with back or neck pain can’t recall a specific incident that brought on their pain. Most back and neck pain are brought on by an accumulation of daily activities that bring on problems over a period of time.

Who gets back pain?

Back and neck pain are equal opportunity conditions. School students are susceptible to back and neck pain from carrying backpacks loaded down with heavy textbooks. Athletes experience neck and back pain from too much exertion or physical contact. Sedentary, middle-aged office workers put themselves at risk of back and neck pain, and older people suffer pain caused by the wear and tear of living for so many years.

How should I treat back and neck pain?

The good news is that back and neck pain can be successfully treated by chiropractic care. Study after study has shown that conservative chiropractic:

  • Is highly effective – in many cases it has been shown to be more effective than medical care or physical therapy.
  • Is exceedingly safe. Complications or side effects are rare.
  • Is cost effective. Sometime up to 10 times as cost effective as other care for the same condition.
  • Provides longer lasting relief than other therapies.
  • Is highly satisfying. A Western Journal of Medicine study found that patients of Chiropractors were 3 times more satisfied with their care than patients of family practice physicians.
